Our Solution: Future Ready By 5
To prepare children for a bright future, we must start early. Ninety percent of a child’s critical brain development happens before age five.
The Future Ready by 5 plan looks at the system as a whole and four main drivers that play a vital role in a child’s ability to develop, learn, and grow. Future Ready by 5 was designed with voices from the community to serve families from all walks of life to ensure every child is kindergarten-ready by 2030.

A zip code should not determine
a child’s success in life.
Geographic, racial, and socioeconomic disparities within our community and others across the country have a devastating effect on children’s kindergarten readiness.
Most children who enter kindergarten with language and literacy skills below their grade level will never catch up to their classmates. This reality sets the tone for the rest of a child’s academic career and creates a lifelong impact. Children who start kindergarten with grade-level skills are more likely to succeed in school and live happier, healthier, more productive lives.
Let’s get 100% of Franklin County children ready for kindergarten!
Future Ready Columbus wants to make getting ready for kindergarten a shared responsibility between parents, guardians, early childhood education professionals, and community members.
Our goal is to have 100% of our county’s children demonstrate kindergarten readiness when taking Ohio’s Kindergarten Readiness Assessment Revised.
The assessment is given when a child enters kindergarten. It measures their knowledge and abilities in four areas:
- Social skills
- Language and literacy
- Mathematics
- Physical well-being and motor development
