Jane has been dedicated to improving the lives of children in Franklin County throughout her four decades of experience in education. Jane’s commitment to excellent and equitable education has been revered and recognized by community members throughout her career, making her a seamless fit as Future Ready’s CEO.

Jane maintains that life experience has been her greatest teacher, though her educational and professional background are robust. After receiving her bachelor and master’s degree in education from The Ohio State University, she went on to excel in her career as an elementary school principal and founder of a 5-Star Step Up to Quality urban preschool.

Among many other recognitions, Jane was named Northwest Woman of the Year honored by the Upper Arlington Rotary and received the Community Involvement Award from Columbus City Schools. The Ohio State University recognized Jane early in her career with the Young Educator Award.

WHY THIS WORK

Throughout her professional experience and community engagement, it became clear to Jane that education is so much more than reading, writing, and mathematics — another reason why she believes so deeply in the Future Ready by 5 plan.

Jane is inspired by the unique opportunity to take a collective impact approach at FRC. She believes deconstructing and rebuilding systems is the best way to accomplish the Future Ready by 5, community-wide goal. Jane says it is her great fortune to lead this organization and, with all hands on deck, change the life trajectory of every child, family and community in Franklin County.

WHY THIS COMMUNITY

As a lifelong member of the Columbus community, Jane believes she is called to serve the area. Her father was the superintendent of Columbus City Schools and encouraged her to carry on his legacy of uniting the people of Franklin County.

Jane’s love of Columbus along with the influence of her upbringing have inspired her to wake up every day and ask herself: What can I contribute to meet the needs of our community today? She leads her life putting human beings at the center of every decision to increase equity and take care of the people in Central Ohio.

Kara fell into State government while studying for her Master’s in Education and Allied Professions, and realized her skills best contribute to impact through policy. The local perspective that the Future Ready by 5 plan focuses on is energizing for Kara. She is thrilled to join FRC at the time FR5 is being implemented. The path has been paved, and Kara is essential to making sure that FRC is hitting the ground running.

WHY THIS WORK

Throughout Kara’s professional career she has focused on accountability, and she believes accountability is the key to the success of any mission. She is passionate about the family focus and is excited to take the infrastructure the FRC team has built and create efficiencies to provide access to resources for every single family in Franklin County.

Kara considers it a great honor to have the opportunity to make an impact on the community she lives in through her work. She’s excited to facilitate conversations with community partners and guide those conversations into action.

WHY THIS COMMUNITY

Originally from Northwest Ohio, Kara is happy to have landed in Columbus with her husband and two children. She loves that Columbus has so much to do but still can have a small-town feel.

Kara is inspired by the fact that most communities in the U.S. haven’t come together in the way that Franklin County has united around FR5. She is thrilled to be on a team that is paving the way for other communities to take action in supporting children and their families in the future.

She is eager to communicate the purpose and mission of the organization to the community and continue to raise awareness around the importance of kindergarten readiness.

Why This Work

MiKayla is no stranger to this important work. It is personal to her.  Prior to kindergarten, she was homeschooled by a stay-at-home mother.  She learned the value of how repetitive vocabulary impacts success and is keenly aware of the direct impact that kindergarten readiness has on a child’s success.  The positive impact on her health, habits, and emotional wellbeing is what she aims to share with others by championing this work.

Resident within MiKayla’s core values is the knowledge of “to whom much is given, much is required.”   The impact of kindergarten readiness is “the much” that she has been given, as she aims to assist the team of Future Ready in providing this crucial service to her community.  For her, it is about the societal and social gains that kindergarten readiness provides.  If for nothing else that this work impacts one child by leading to better grades, lower dropout rates, better health and lifestyle habits then her work has meaning and society advances.

Why This Community

MiKayla was raised in Whitehall, Ohio.  She is a graduate of Whitehall Yearling High School and Hampton University.  Her home community instilled compassion, empathy, and service.  All of which are hallmarks of MiKayla’s brand.  She knows the value of how a healthy community can impact emotional wellbeing, feelings of safety, and how it inspires positive curiosity and the desire to grow.  She wants to continue the legacy of her family by giving back while also weaving a thread into the bright futures of others.

Amanda joins Future Ready Columbus with an extensive nonprofit background, having worked at notable organizations including Nationwide Children’s, National Alliance for Mental Illness, and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. This coupled with her background as an English teacher make her the perfect fit for Future Ready Columbus.

WHY THIS WORK

Throughout her experience as a teacher, Amanda saw and was frustrated by an overemphasis on test scores. There was no measurable way to consider the challenges each child faces outside of the classroom and how that is reflected in test results. She is especially thrilled that FRC is addressing these complex disparities which affect children’s Kindergarten readiness.

Amanda is thrilled to be working alongside a team that is not only having conversations and conducting studies but pushing the needle forward into the implementation stage and toward real, tangible change.

WHY THIS COMMUNITY

Amanda moved to Ohio 5 years ago from Atlanta, Georgia. She sees Columbus as a thriving city and appreciates that it maintains a friendly, welcoming vibe while providing extensive and diverse opportunities to community members.

Amanda contributes to her community inside and outside of work. Her front yard is home to a Columbus Blessing Box, which supports those struggling with food insecurity. Amanda is also a certified yoga teacher.
